At Ink on Hair, we specialise in providing scalp micropigmentation (SMP) treatment, which is a kind of medical hair tattoo that aims to offer a solution to those suffering from hair loss. It does this by replicating the appearance of hair follicles. It can be applied anywhere on the scalp, whether your hair is thinning or you are completely bald in order to offer a shaved-head look or increase the appearance of hair density. Today we are going to focus on SMP aftercare in order to address the question as to when you can wash your hair after the treatment.
SMP Aftercare
Every time you have your SMP treatment, you will need to take great care to keep the area dry. You need at least ten days for your skin to properly heal between treatments. It is within the first four days that you need to keep your scalp dry due to the small scabs from where the pigment has been implanted into the skin. Redness and itching are normal in this time, but you need to leave it alone as much a possible. If you suffer from itching, you can gently massage in a small amount of coconut oil using a patting motion to ensure you don’t dislodge any scabs. In order to protect your scalp, you may want to wear a hat, but it should be loose and comfortable in order not to irritate your skin. You shouldn’t need to wash your scalp in this time as you also need to avoid sweating excessively, which means missing the gym for a few days. All you should be doing is using a moisturiser after the first two days post-treatment in order to support the healing process.
When and How to Wash Your Scalp
After the first four days of the healing process, you can wash your hair or scalp. You should only wash the area gently, with water and baby shampoo. You are free to continue your normal routine from this point, up until your next SMP appointment. This waiting period is vital as if they fall off prematurely, the pigment may be lost. Your follicle replications from your first appointment set the foundations for the rest of your treatment sessions, so practising good aftercare and washing your scalp only after four days post-treatment is essential in order to obtain the expected results.
